When: Sunday, October 24 · 2:00pm - 4:00pm
Where: Marvin Center 405 - 800 21st Street, N.W., Washington DC

Many thousands of years back, the Hindu traditions had developed deep understanding of astronomy, human anatomy, medicine, life, the nature of spiritual existence, etc. All of this was possible only through yoga. Yoga should not be understood merely as aerobic exercises; real yoga is connecting with the Universal spirit.

Dr. Rajan Narayanan, a mentor at the “Life in Yoga” foundation, is a practitioner & active researcher of Yoga. He has studied different religions & explores the Yogic aspects in various religious practices. He will be talking about the research methodology behind these Yogic practices.

The event is free and open to all. Snacks will be provided.

This program is a part of "Speaker on Campus" initiative of Hindu Swayamsevak Sangh.

This event is co-sponsored by Multicultural Student Services Center, GWU (http://gwired.gwu.edu/mssc/).

Distortion of Indian History - Why and How?

Venue: Marvin Center 307 at the GWU - 800 21st St NW, Washington, DC 20052
Time: September 19 · 1:00pm - 3:00pm

Over many years, great national heroes of India have been vilified by colonial and marxist historians. For example, Guru Tegh Bahadur was termed a "bandit", some of India's freedom fighters were called "terrorists," while spiritual leaders such as Swami Vivekananda or Sri Aurobindo were termed "communal."

Hindu YUVA wishes to draw your attention to this issue that has been needlessly dividing large sections of Indians, creating negative perception about India on a global level and also harming millions of young Indian minds. Come, join us for an interactive session to know more about this vilification campaign against some of the most respected personalities of India.

We have with us Shri Atul Rawat, a noted historian from India. He has published over a thousand articles in the Indian press and authored half a dozen books. Having studied at Delhi University and Jawaharlal Nehru University at Delhi, he also was a Fulbright Scholar and was associated with the GWU as a visiting scholar in 1990-91. He has lectured extensively in India and also on a few occasions in the US. He was associated with the National Council of Educational Research and Training, India for reviewing the then existing books of history and prepare detailed syllabus for all stages of school education. He is also a social activist and one of the founding and executive committee members of the Save Education Movement.

This event is free and open to all. Snacks will be served. Please bring your friends along.

After event report - On 19th September 2010, Hindu YUVA at the George Washington University hosted for the first time the speaker on campus event with Shree Atul Rawat as the invited guest. The topic chosen was, “Distortion of Indian history, why and how”. Shree Atul Rawat had been a part of NCERT from the year 1998 – 2003 reviewing the then existing history books. The event was attended by 15 people. Shree Atul Rawat spoke about how Indian history has been selectively presented with a bias in the history books.

Shree Rawat started with emphasising the importance of history for a nation and how forgetting the collective past of a society causes collective dimensia. He mentioned that any person while presenting ones views about history adds his own flavour of bias. He also talked about the methods of distortion; either by intentional addition of facts, omission of facts, by the use of language, while translating and errors in printing either by ones knowledge or without. Political motivations play a major role in creating distortions.

Shree Rawat mentions how during the olden days, academia and politics were kept independent of each other and bore no influence on each other. This resulted in unbiased presentation of history. One such books known for its unbiased nature, he mentions, is the Rajatarangini written by Kalhana. However, with the Mughal invasion, the royal court sponsored historical writing came in to being. These writers, who wrote the daily happenings in the country, were hired by the court. Because these accounts were court funded, it is much too obvious to believe that they could have been subjected to a certain level of distortion favouring the employer. The British who came later had their own motives to distort the Indian history and present to the people of India and the world.

Shree Rawat also mentioned how biased writing of Indian history takes place today while publishing study materials for the students and how he had to knock the doors of justice to point out the same. These distorted facts bear a direct socio, political and cultural impact not only on the people whose ancestors were a part of this history, but, the nation in general.

The talk was followed by 15 minutes of question and answer session. Many thought provoking questions were asked for which Shree Rawat answered elaborately.
